Methods of Perception

About

This book focuses on how we perceive the world around us through our five senses. The book was created using an extensive process of creating a work book and then taking multiple pages from the book and overlaying them using Photoshop and InDesign.

The work book consists of about 50 spreads of textures. The objects used to create the book consist of fabric, wood, bark, bottle caps, clay, paint, photos, spices (i.e. salt, pepper, paprika, garlic, sugar, etc...), fur, hair, yarn, thread, glass, hemp, netting, lace, dry fruit, lemons, honey, Styrofoam, wax, fire (pages were burnt), ashes, soot, flowers (real and fake), feathers, and much more. The work book has everything, but the kitchen sink (well there maybe a photo).

Creative Process

The workbook was created over the course of 10 weeks. Upon completion pages from the book were photographed and then munipulated using Photoshop.

Final Book

The Methods of Perception book was created using InDesign. By placing the images in InDesign I was able to create the book quickly. The text and opacity overlays throughout the book were used to make the text stand out from the background. By using InDesign I was able to have a cohesive design and grid aligned book.

Extinction is Forever

About

Extinction is Forever is a poster that depicts different animals that are on the verge of extinction. The animals are disintegrating and the closer to extinction they are, the less color they have and the more disintegrated they appear to be. The poster was created using photography taken by me of the animals at the San Francisco Zoo along with the use of Photoshop.

The animals, appearance was created using a custom brush along with the use of levels, contrast, saturation, masks, and blur. The animals were extracted from their original background using channels, the selector tool, and edge refine.

The background is a composite of a fire, tornado, lightning storm, tsunami, blizzard, and erupting volcano. It is set to black and white to bring focus to the animals in the foreground as well as keep all the disasters a neutral color. These natural disasters are slowly killing off our beloved animals.
